S.E.L. stands for Social Emotional Learning and is a class delivered by our school counselor Amy Gahl-Sweeney. SEL is taught at every school in the West Allis-West Milwaukee School District. At the elementary level the classes meet once a week for 30 minutes. The curriculum addresses several areas of social and emotional growth such as academic success, communication and social skills, diversity, safety and wellness, careers and transitions. In addition, SEL also teaches students selfcontrol strategies, conflict resolution, and ways to calm down when they are experiencing strong feelings by using mindfulness strategies. Throughout the year, you should see student workbooks coming home once a unit is complete. Please review these booklets with your child and ask them to share their learning. If you have any questions, you may contact Mrs. GahlSweeney at 414-604-3800, ext. 1708.
